Welcome to Reception/Year 1
Please click on the link to see our EYFS Overview which details what we will be learning throughout the year.
In Reception we start the year by finding out about ourselves. We bring in our special boxes which we have filled with things that are important to us or that we have collected during the school holidays. We find out about different interests by talking about these boxes with our friends. We then all help to decide what we want to turn our role play area into, based on interests that come from the class.
We have great fun using the role play area to support learning across the whole curriculum. We use lots of maths, for example using money to pay for things, recognising numerals and keeping scores. We enjoy using the Numicon resources, especially the large foam shapes. We also have fun developing our reading and writing skills. We share lots of stories and meet Mrs Wilson who comes in each week to help us choose our library books. We can take these home for a whole week to share with our families. Our weekly class visitors also include Miss McCartney who teaches us music and Mrs MacKernan who comes in to read books with us. We have daily access to our outdoor area which we use to develop all curriculum areas.
We go on autumn walks around the school grounds. We explore colour in our investigation area and do lots of talking, measuring, cooking and investigating with things that we find at this time of year, such as pumpkins and conkers.
In Reception we find out about different kinds of transport in this half term and the children choose what they want our role play area to be, linked in with their interests. We use lots of maths in role play, for example we write out tickets and timetables and plan different journeys we want to go on. We use money to buy tickets and look at timetables to see what time our journeys are. We also develop our reading and writing skills through stories that we read and write about travel.
We are having great fun learning our Phase 2 phonics sounds and this halt term we go on sound and word searches both indoors and outdoors. We continue to share lots of stories. Mrs Wilson continues to come in each week to help us choose our library books and Mrs MacKernan comes in and reads books with us.
We find out about magnets in our investigation area and make some vehicles with magnetic blocks. We do experiments with cars to find out about the best surfaces for them to move on and see what happens when we use ramps at different heights for them to drive down. We learn a special road safety song about crossing the road that we can teach our adults at home.
Miss McCartney continues to come each Tuesday for our music session and we also perform a Christmas Nativity for our families. Spring 1
In Reception we talk about ‘New Year’ and find out more about the days of the week and the months of the year. We think about January being the time when some people make resolutions and we decide what we would like to learn to be able to do over the coming months. We also learn about other celebrations later on in the term, such as Chinese New Year and Easter. We find out about the changes that occur from Winter to Spring.
We read traditional stories this term and follow the children’s interests in these. The stories are the basis for work across the whole curriculum. For example, when we read ‘The Gingerbread man’ we make our own gingerbread men and we do experiments to find out why the gingerbread man rode on the foxes back and didn’t just cross the river by himself!
In this term we also find out about different materials. We read ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and do a detective hunt both inside and outside our school to find out what materials the builders used to make our school. We then explore materials and their properties in our investigation area.
We continue to learn the Phase 3 sounds. We enjoy reading a wider range of stories and also start to write these stories down. We also have lots of fun making up our own stories and using props to help us to retell stories. We use the Numicon shapes to help us to recognise numerals to 20 and beyond and we explore 2D and 3D shapes when building.
Class visitors include Miss McCartney who teaches us music, Mrs MacKernan who hears us read and Mrs Wilson who runs our library.
