Welcome to Reception/Year 1
Please click on the link to see our EYFS Overview which details what we will be learning throughout the year.
Autumn term 2
This half term we find out about different kinds of transport and the children will choose what they want our role play area to be, linked in with this theme and their interests. We use lots of maths and literacy in our role play. We write out tickets and timetables and plan different journeys we want to go on. We use money to buy tickets and look at timetables to see what time our journeys are. We also develop our reading and writing skills through stories that we read and write about travel and different kinds of transport.
We are having great fun in phonics and this half term we will be going on sound and word searches both indoors and outdoors. We will continue to look at the seasonal changes across the whole school grounds and in this term find out about the changes from autumn to winter.
We find out about magnets in our investigation area and make some vehicles with magnetic blocks. We do experiments with cars to find out about the best surfaces for them to move on and see what happens when we use ramps at different heights for them to drive down. We learn a special road safety song about crossing the road that we can teach our adults at home. Miss McCartney will also continue to come each Thursday for our music session.
Autumn term 1
We start the year by finding out about ourselves. We bring in special boxes which we have filled with things that are important to us or that we have collected during the school holidays. We find out about different interests by talking about these boxes with our friends. We then all help to decide what we want to turn our role play area into, based on interests that come from the class.
We then have great fun using the role play area to support learning across the whole curriculum. We use lots of maths, for example using money to pay for things, recognising numerals and keeping scores. We also have fun developing our reading and writing skills in this area through related reading and writing opportunities.
We go on to explore other individuals’ interests through sharing books and stories in class and also through using our library. The children get to choose a library book each week to take home to share with their families.
We have daily access to our outdoor area which we use to develop all curriculum areas. We also go on autumn walks around the school grounds. We explore colour in our investigation area and do lots of talking, measuring, cooking and investigating with things that we find at this time of year, such as pumpkins and conkers.
